Labradorite

Labradorite comes from the Labrador region of Canada. This Canadian region is home to approximately one-third of the population of Indigenous peoples (Innu, Inuit, and Métis). This incredible gemstone was discovered in 1770 by a group of missionaries from Central Europe tasked with evangelizing the local population.

The suffix “ite,” derived from Greek, means “mineral.” Labradorite literally means “mineral from Labrador.” It wasn’t until 1780 that the geologist M. Foster named this stone labradorite.

This stone is sometimes called "rainbow moonstone." There is also spectrolite, a variety of labradorite that displays all the shades of the light spectrum. Discovered during World War II in Finland, this mineral is somewhat reminiscent of the inside of mussel shells. Although the colors are similar, labradorite should not be confused with opal or moonstone.

Several legends are associated with labradorite. The most famous is that of the Scandinavian peoples. This legend tells that labradorite possesses its magnificent iridescent reflections thanks to the aurora borealis.

Meanwhile, the Inuit legend tells of a young warrior who broke a massive labradorite stone with his spear to release its celestial light. Shards of light erupted from the stone and rose into the sky, forming the aurora borealis. Others fell to earth, becoming forever embedded in the rock, creating the labradorite stones with their magnificent reflections.

Some natives believed that this stone was the link between the earthly world and the invisible world. They thought that the rock contained the souls of their ancestors.

However, during archaeological excavations in Maine, various objects carved from labradorite were found. They date back to the year 1000 and were made by the Algonquin Native Americans.

A belief holds that people drawn to labradorite are descendants of the lost continent of Atlantis. As a reminder, Atlantis was a vast island, given to the sea god Poseidon when the world was divided. This island suddenly disappeared during a cataclysm caused by Zeus.

According to ancient beliefs, labradorite possesses powerful healing properties. They recount that grinding it into a powder could cure many ailments. In the second half of the 19th century, many jewelers crafted fabulous jewelry in various styles using labradorite. They notably created cameos and intaglio pieces. Lesser-quality labradorites were used as facing stones on building facades or as decorative ornaments.

Labradorite belongs to the plagioclase feldspar family, which includes silicates and tectosilicates. It is primarily composed of sodium, calcium, iron, and magnesium. It exhibits magnificent metallic blue, yellow, or green iridescence caused by adularescence, a shimmering effect resulting from the interaction of different internal layers, also known as the Schiller effect. It forms in metamorphic or igneous rocks. It has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale.

The main deposits are located in Madagascar, Algeria, Australia, China, France, etc.
